The Island

On the island you feel cold. So cold that 6 blankets and a Mihai are barely adequate for Cristina. The island stands at 4000m. Oxigen is thinner here. Locals have it well hidden and share it sparingly. They walk springlike while for you, the poor tourist, every step is a new challenge. On the island the herds of panicked tourists, fear and disbelief in their eyes, stop often to catch their breath. On the island you see the sunset from 4200m.

On the island you share a home with a local family. You eat quinoa soup, potatoes, cheese and tomatoes. On the island you drink muna tea and Te Macho(coca, muna, eucalyptus, pisco, how water). You forget momentarily about the oxigen.

On the island you dress in traditional clothing and dance in the village club. The locals probably open the secret pipes and flood the hall with oxygen. The turists jump with happyness.

Most important, on the island you look at the night sky.

Goodbye Peru

To Puno

The bus ride from Arequipa to Puno is one, if not the most scenic bus ride we’ve seen in 8.5 months of travel. There’s nothing quite like being at 4000 meters with the Andean Plateau stretching to the horizon and lake Titikaka filling in blue.
